Stiff necks, like most forms of spinal pain, are usually related to a misalignment of the vertebrae, which places pressure on one or more of the spinal nerves. In many cases, a stiff neck results from a sudden jolt to the body that causes the neck to be stretched beyond its normal range of motion.

This condition, commonly referred to as 'whiplash,' can cause stiffness, discomfort, and even full or partial paralysis of the neck. Neck pain is usually associated with pain and stiffness in other parts of the upper body such as the shoulders, back, chest, and head. Tenderness in the forearm or stiffness in the joints of the arm are also common symptoms associated with neck injuries.
In some cases, neck injuries such as whiplash don't have any immediate symptoms other than a slight twinge in the back of the neck. However, after a day or so, pain and stiffness are likely to occur, and if left untreated, the condition can worsen over a period of weeks, sometimes becoming almost unbearable.

Chiropractors can often diagnose and treat neck injuries using a variety of methods, including spinal manipulation, hot and cold therapy, and massage. However, it's important to learn to recognize the symptoms of neck injury, and seek care as soon as possible.
