Whiplash occurs when your head is jerked back and forth suddenly, resulting in injury to the tissues that support your neck. Automobile accidents are the most common cause of whiplash, but it can result from virtually any violent jolt to the head.

During a car accident, the head is usually tossed about suddenly, often bending or stretching the neck beyond its normal limits. While whiplash is commonly thought to result from being struck from the rear, it can actually be caused by impact from any direction.

Although symptoms may not occur immediately, they'll usually include pain in the head, neck, or back. This pain is generally the result of tendons, ligaments, and muscles being stretched or even torn during the accident. However, in some cases, more severe injuries, such as ruptured disks, vertebral misalignments, and fractures can also occur.Another complication commonly associated with whiplash is nerve root irritation, which can lead to a variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms including headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and pain in the arms or hands.

If you experience any of these symptoms following an accident, it's a good idea to apply ice to your neck to reduce swelling, and contact a chiropractor as soon as possible for further advice.
